Our Woods
There
have been two positions that we have spotted coyotes. In camera
position 2 and camera position 5 we have spotted multiple videos and
pictures from coyotes. It was surprising for our group to spot these
neat creatures in Essex Middle School woods.
Scientific Name: Canis Latrans
Species: Mammal
Diet: Omnivore
Size: Head and body, 32 to 37 inch (81 to 94 cm): Tail, 16 in (41 cm)
Weight: 20 to 50 pounds (9 to 23 kg)
Behavior
Coyotes travel in large groups and they mostly hunt in pairs. A typical coyote pack consists of six closely related adults, yearlings and young. Their packs are generally smaller than wolf packs. Their social behavior is more in line with the Dingo. This is due to an earlier expression of aggression, and the fact that coyotes reach their full growth in their first year, unlike wolves, which reach it in their second year. Common names of coyote groups are a band, a pack, or a rout. Coyotes are primarily nocturnal but can often be seen during daylight hours. They were once diurnal, but have adapted to more nocturnal behavior with the pressure from humans

Habitat
Coyotes are very adaptable and exist in all habitats in Vermont, including suburban
areas. They might be living in the woods near you!
Author Note- Greetings you all! We are very excited to know more about these creatures and knowing they are lurking in our woods! Do not worry! They won't disturb you if you don't disturb them! Take care :-) ~McKayla
