Buckthorn

Common Name of Species:
Buckthorn

Scientific Name of Species:

Rhamnus

Where is it native?  What kind of environment is it found in in it’s native habitat?

Buckthorn is native in east Asia and some parts of North America.  The environment in this habitat is not too humid and the temperature is warm but not hot.  Buckthorn lives in forests and is taking over some of the native species in Vermont.

What are the effects of this invasive species on the ecosystem?
Buckthorn is taking up the space in the forests that the natives usually use.  The natives then cannot grow and might become extinct.  Buckthorn berries also give animals digestive problems.

What impacts do you think it will have?
Buckthorn is taking up the space in the forests that the natives usually use.  The natives then cannot grow and might become extinct.

What are the best ways to remove this species?
You can remove buckthorn by hand, spray plants, cutting if the buckthorn is large, and/or burning the plant after removal so it does not regrow.
We are pretty sure that this is on the EMS campus.  We have found a lot at Shelburne Farms.  To get rid of this invasive, along with some honeysuckle, we pulled out and piled it together so the Farm staff could get it.  Another none invasive that we pulled out of the garden, chamomile.  It can be very invasive to a garden.
